Chapter 7
It didnât take long to find Adam. He was pacing in the lobby, running his hands through his hair in distress.
âAre you okay?â Clary asked, sitting down on one of the couches. He started when she spoke but shook his head when he saw who it was. Clary knew that there was no way that he was going to open up to her, but it was worth a try.
âIâm fine,â he said with a winning smile. âJust needed to get some air, you know? Itâs stuffy in there.â
âI understand,â she nodded. âIt must be stressful. Youâre just trying to enjoy a party, but everyoneâs asking questions. Itâs not even the election yet, but youâve got to defend your office from your own brother. Iâm sorry, that canât be pleasant. If it makes you feel better, Iâll probably vote for you.â
âProbably?â Adam asked with an amused smile, sitting down on one of the couches opposite her. âGreat. Iâve got a whole bunch of nos, and one probably. Everythingâs coming up Adam.â
âYouâve had a good run,â Clary teased, âmaybe itâs time to give someone else a shot. Isnât there something else you want to do? Scrapbooking? Iâve got a few books on the subject in my shop. Iâm sure youâd be a natural. Forget being a mayor, you could be a fantastic scrapbooker.â
âThere we go,â Adam said jokingly, âmy whole future is planned. Drop the politics thing and join a scrapbooking club. Why didnât I think about it before?â
âYeah,â Clary asked, âwhy didnât you?â
âI donât think scrapbooking is going to get me a lot of respect,â Adam pointed out.
âNo,â Clary shook her head. âIâm serious. Why not let someone else be mayor? From what Iâve seen tonight, itâs just stressful. Everyoneâs always criticizing you, and you canât even enjoy one party. Why not throw in the towel and focus on your businesses? No offense, but this is a thankless job.â
âI donât do it for the thanks,â Adam admitted. âI love Valley Springs. Itâs a good town. I grew up here, and Iâve just always loved it, you know? I thought that if I was mayor then I could do some good. And have, not that anyone sees the good. I donât want to give this up.â
âI get it,â Clary said slowly, âyou donât want to give up this job. You think you can do a better job than Anthony?â
âAre you kidding?â Adam scoffed. âThis is all a big joke to Anthony. He thinks that all he has to do is smile for the cameras. I canât let him be my replacement. I understand if someone else wants to take over, and Iâll step down to a worthy candidate. But I wonât step down for Anthony. Heâll quit after a week, if he makes it that long.â
âWhyâs he running then?â Clary asked frowning. âThatâs a lot of commitment for one joke. Besides, heâs got his hands full with the news station and Natalie.â
âYouâre telling me,â Adam shook his head. âHe always had a thing for complicated women.
